Description
The hotel at 22 George Street in Montrose was built in 1890 and features three storeys plus an attic. It is part of an irregular terrace, with a front made of sandstone ashlar and a brick rear. The building has a string course above the ground floor, cill courses on the first and second floors, and an eaves cornice. Notable architectural elements include curvilinear wallhead gables and dormers, as well as chamfered margins.
The principal elevation is asymmetrical and consists of five bays. The central bay has a stone-mullioned bipartite window at the ground floor, with a corbelled and canted oriel window on the first and second floors, topped by a Dutch gabled wallhead dormer. To the left, there is a painted doorpiece with pilasters and a round-arched doorway that features a broken pediment and an acanthus leaf finial. Above this door, there are windows on the first and second floors. The extreme left bay has a window at the ground, first, and second floors. The two bays on the right contain a former shopfront with four basket-arched windows at the ground level. The inner bay on the right has a shallow segmental-arched window on the first floor with a hoodmould, and an ogee gabled window on the second floor with a ball finial, which is repeated in bipartite form in the extreme right bay. There are also two later box dormers to the right.
The northwest elevation adjoins 20 George Street. The southeast elevation is symmetrical and has three bays. The central bay features round-arched windows at the ground, first, second, and attic storeys, with the attic window set in a Dutch gable that includes a chimney. The flanking bays have windows at the ground, first, and second floors. To the right, there is a single bay with a splayed corner, which also has windows at the ground, first, and second floors, the second-floor window featuring an ogee gable and finial. A box dormer is located to the left.
The hotel has timber sash and case windows above the ground floor, with plate glass in the lower sections. The roofs are pitched and covered with grey slate, and the stone skews and skewputts include a corbelled and gabletted feature on the northwest side.
