Description
Burness House, located at 9 and 11 Bow Butts in Montrose, is an early 19th century building with a later addition. It is a three-storey, three-bay house that has been combined with an adjoining two-bay house, now forming a single property. The front features lined render, while the sides are constructed of sandstone rubble, with full-length 19th century additions at the rear. The building has plain margins.
On the southwest elevation, which is the principal facade, No. 11 is symmetrical with a corniced doorpiece at the center, a rectangular fanlight, and a panelled door. There are windows on either side, with smaller windows centered above on the first and second floors, the latter having heads set close under the eaves. No. 9 has a window in the center at ground level, a door to the left, and windows on the first and second floors, with an additional off-set window to the right on the second floor, also with heads closely set under the eaves.
The southeast elevation features a single bay gable end with windows off-set to the right. The northwest elevation adjoins 63 Baltic Street, while the northeast elevation is a single storey with irregular fenestration. The windows throughout are timber sash and case, with plate glass, and some are boarded. There is a brick gablehead stack on the southeast and a mutual stack.
The property is enclosed by boundary walls and gatepiers along the street elevation. The boundary wall is coped and coursed, with a pair of square-plan, corniced, and capped gatepiers.
