Description

1-2 Hudson Square in Montrose is a late 18th century building with later alterations. It consists of two three-storey houses arranged in an L-plan, featuring harled exteriors with modern bull-faced render on the ground floor, rubble at the rear, and painted margins.

The southeast elevation of No 1 showcases a Regency style timber pilastered porch at the center, with a panelled door and a rectangular two-pane fanlight above. There are flanking quadrant sections with tiled roofs in the re-entrant angles. Above the porch, there is a window centered on the first floor, with additional windows in the bays on the ground and first floors, and a window on the second floor to the left and inset to the right. A two-storey, single bay addition is located to the left.

The west elevation of No 2 is similar to No 1 but features a three-bay second floor and a stone mullioned bipartite window to the right. No 3 Hudson Square is adjacent to the right.

The east elevation of No 2 has irregular fenestration, with windows blocked at the ground floor.

The north elevation of No 1 presents a four-bay irregularly fenestrated façade facing Panmure Street. It has two bays to the right with windows centered from the ground to the second floors, an inner bay to the left with a small off-set window at the ground and an additional window at the second floor, and a bay to the left with a window off-set to the left at the second floor. There is also a two-storey, single bay addition to the right.

The windows throughout the building are 12-pane timber sash and case. In No 2, the bay to the right has new frames and glazing at the ground and first floors, with plate glass at the second floor. In No 1, new frames and glazing have been added to the second floor of the Panmure Street elevation. The roofs are pitched with grey slate, featuring stone skews, brick gablehead stacks on the west and south, and ridge stacks to the northeast.

The interior was not seen in 1998.

The boundary walls and gatepiers include a pair of square section, corniced and capped gatepiers to the west, with a wrought-iron lampholder across the entrance. There are rubble stone boundary walls to the east and west, along with a dwarf wall to the south that encloses a garden extending south.
