Description
This is a group value example of a terrace of eight houses, dating to around 1850. The terrace is located on Provost Scott’s Road, Montrose, and comprises a central section of twelve bays flanked by end blocks of four bays each. The front and sides of the houses are constructed from sandstone ashlar, while the rear is of squared and snecked stone. The ground floor is rusticated, with a prominent band course above the basement and beneath the first and second-floor window sills. An eaves cornice and blocking course complete the exterior.
The principal (east) elevation features a central section housing four houses which are paired and mirrored around the centre. Number 3, on the right, has a stone staircase with cast-iron handrails leading to a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight. A window sits above the door at the first floor, with two basement windows to the right, and ground and first-floor windows also present. A bowed dormer is positioned to the right. Number 4, to the left of Number 3, is a mirror image, but with a later four-light dormer. A continuous balcony at the first floor joins Numbers 3 and 4, featuring a decorative cast-iron balustrade. Numbers 5 and 6 exhibit a similar design to Numbers 3 and 4, with bowed dormers. The right-hand end block, Number 2, has a seven-step stone staircase leading to a painted, Ionic fluted columned porch and a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight. Windows are centred above at the first and second floors, with a single bay to the right and two bays to the left, each with windows at the basement, ground, first, and second floors. Number 7, the left-hand end block, mirrors Number 2, with an entrance in the inner bay to the left; the porch is unpainted.
The north elevation displays three bays with windows at the basement, ground, first and second floors. A central bay and window at the second floor have been blinded. A slightly set-back two-storey, single-bay section extends to the right. A corniced ashlar doorpiece shelters a recessed six-panel door in the west-facing return. The south elevation shows three bays with windows at the basement, ground, first and second floors; the centre bay and a window to the right at the basement and second floors are blinded. An attached garage with a piended roof is located to the left.
The west elevation features an eight-bay central section. There are two piended dormers and one later flat-roofed dormer to the right, and a mansard attic addition to the left, which has four bipartite windows. The two-bay end blocks have blank two-storey projections at the extremes left and right. Single-storey, piended roof additions are situated to the left and right of the central section. The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case, with 4-pane sashes to the mansard bipartites. Grey slate piended roofs cover the structure. Three deep ashlar stacks extend to the full depth of the central section, with ashlar wallhead stacks to the north and south of the end blocks. Four brick wallhead stacks are present to the west, two to the left. Interiors were not inspected in 1998. Low, coped ashlar boundary walls run along the front (east) with corniced, square-section end piers. Cast-iron railings are present to the north and south, while a rubble stone boundary wall is located at the rear (west).
