Scott Terrace, 1 St Mary's Road, Montrose

Scott Terrace is a circa 1860 terrace of 16 bays, built as a combination of domestic accommodation and warehouses. The building is constructed of sandstone, with squared and snecked stone at ground level, ashlar at first floor, and rubble to the rear. Chamfered margins are present. Forestairs and balconies provide access to the first-floor entrances.

The south elevation is symmetrical at first floor, comprising four houses of four bays each; the ground floor is asymmetrical. Number 1, on the left, has two openings and a garage door beneath its balcony, leading to a stone staircase and decorative cast-iron balustrade. The central right features a door with a rectangular fanlight and a window to the left, with additional windows flanking the bays. Canted, slate-hung dormers are above the outer bays. Number 3, on the right, mirrors this arrangement, sharing a balcony with Number 1. Numbers 5 and 7 continue this pattern, with variations in ground-floor openings, including a former “Office.” First-floor and attic levels are consistent across these properties, with the exception of Number 3’s central left door.

The west elevation presents two bays. A gable end on the right features a raised ground floor with a canted oriel window. To the left, a basement opening, a ground-floor window, and a canted slate-hung dormer are present. A flat-roofed section behind the ridge incorporates decorative wrought-iron brattishing forming a roof balcony and a modern attic-storey conservatory addition.

The east elevation is a harled gable end with a window at first floor.

The north elevation consists of six bays arranged in a 2-2-2 pattern. Blocked ground floor openings are visible, and first-floor windows are set beneath small gables with paired windows. A wing returns to the right, incorporating a piended dormer and an attic balcony addition.

The glazing consists of four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roofs are covered in grey slate, with ashlar gableheads and ridge stacks topped with full complements of polygonal cans.

Outbuildings include an ashlar and squared and snecked sandstone garage with a piended grey slate roof, terminated by cast-iron finials, located on the south side. A raised garden and drying lawn are set to the east of the garage. A cast-iron street lamp with a decorative bracket stands adjacent to the steps leading to numbers 3 and 5. Wrought-iron hoop railings are situated upon a coped base along the west side.
