Description

St Mary's and St Peter's Episcopal Hall, located on Panmure Place in Montrose, was designed by John Henderson in 1844 and later modified by Alexander Ross of Inverness in 1878. This gable-ended Gothic church features side porches, pointed arch openings, and panelled, battered clasping buttresses that rise to gablet-capped pinnacles. The front gable is constructed of sandstone ashlar, while the body and porches are harled with a base course.

The east elevation showcases a tall stepped three-light window with a moulded surround and hoodmould, along with a wheel window in the gablehead. The flanking porches are set back from the nave, each containing a single window on the return. The south elevation has a gable end with a porch to the right that includes a three-light window and a small doorway in the return. The body of the nave to the left features two paired windows separated by a buttress, while the gable end of the porch to the left has clasping buttresses and a single window, along with a large splayed entrance in the return, which has two-leaf doors with ornate hinges.

On the west elevation, there is a gable end with two traceried windows, a blocked circular opening above, and a small louvred ventilator lancet in the gablehead. The porch to the right is complemented by an aisle extending to the front on the left. The north elevation features an aisle to the right with two windows and a gable end to the left that forms the front porch.

The building has timber-framed plate glass glazing and leaded lights at the rear. The roofs are covered with graded grey slate and feature stone sawtooth coping at the gablehead stack, with battered coping on the south gable. Decorative metal gutter brackets are also present.

Inside, the hall has undergone a modern conversion with partitions and a mezzanine.
