Description
This is a circa 1820 classical house, originally built as a single dwelling, that has been subdivided into two properties, 13 and 15 Park Road, Newhaven. The house is two storeys with a basement. The front elevation presents a symmetrical facade, while the rear is asymmetrical. The plan is rectangular, with a single-storey addition to the front of No. 15, an external stone stair leading to a flat-roofed porch at the rear of No. 13, and a piended single-storey extension to the north.
No. 13 is built of squared and snecked, stugged grey rubble sandstone with raised and polished dressings, long and short quoins. No. 15 has pebbledash to the north and west elevations, and a single-storey yellow sandstone addition to the west, both with raised margins, a cill course, a blocking course, and projecting cornices.
The west elevation, originally the main entrance for No. 15, features a lean-to timber and glazed porch surrounding the central entrance, with a Doric pilastered doorpiece, a plain frieze, and a projecting cornice. Flanking the porch are tripartite windows on the ground floor, and single windows at the first floor. A piended single-storey extension is to the left, with a timber door and mullioned fanlight in the right bay, and a casement window in the outer left bay.
The north (Park Road) elevation has a single-storey addition at ground level extending east to west, under a pitched roof to the boundary wall. Single windows are located at the first floor in central, right, and outer-right bays. A blind window is in the outer-left bay.
The east (original rear) elevation of No. 13 has a stone stair leading to a ground-floor entry in a projecting central bay. A flat-roofed porch now surrounds a modern door, with single windows flanking the ground floor entry. A single window is positioned above the porch at the first floor, and further single windows are located in the remaining bays.
The windows are mostly timber sash and case, with two panes to the ground floor tripartites on the west side and a 12-light lying-pane uPVC sash and case window on the first floor of the right-hand bay on the east side. The remaining openings have 16-light lying-pane timber sash and case windows. The main block and the north extension have a grey slate roof, with raised stone skews, rendered apex stacks to the north and south, and projecting cornices. Various roof vents are also visible. The interior was not inspected in 1996.
A random rubble boundary wall runs along Park Road, with round-arched coping. Replacement timber gates lead to No. 13, while replacement iron railings are situated at No. 15.
