Description

The property comprises two houses, originally one, dating from the 1830s to 1840s, and potentially a mid-19th century remodelling of an earlier 19th-century house. It is constructed of stone rubble, with the front elevation facing Exeter Road stuccoed and the rear elevation painted, and has slate roofs with brick chimney shafts. The original plan included a double-depth main block and a service courtyard to the rear, shielded from Exeter Road by a service block likely used for servants' or grooms' accommodation, with a stable block completing the south side of the courtyard.

The Exeter Road elevation has a 3:2:1 bay arrangement, with the servants’ block to the left being simpler in design. The main block’s front elevation has a platband at first floor level, stepping back at the right due to the constricted site. A flat-roofed stuccoed porch sits in this angle, featuring a moulded cornice supported by a pier with arcaded balustrading. The front door is a four-panel design with panelled reveals, and a later 19th-century two-pane sash window is to the right. Above this is an early 19th-century 12-pane sash. To the left of the porch (No 30), the facade projects forward, showing a symmetrical arrangement with a recessed four-panel service door and overlight, flanked by 16-pane sashes and matching windows above. Further south, the front is roughcast with a central cartway, having a 20th-century plank door and three 16-pane first-floor sashes. The north (garden) front of No 31 has deep boxed eaves with moulded brackets and a platband running below the eaves. A five-bay verandah, with two cast iron columns supporting a glazed roof, is present. There are a pair of high transomed French windows with small panes and margin lights, and two first-floor 12-pane sashes featuring margin panes and sill blocks. The west elevation of No 31, facing Four Mills Lane, displays a tall round-headed stair window with margin panes, along with two 20th-century small-pane windows and a 20th-century door with a cast iron fanlight. A tall wall borders the service courtyard, featuring a stone coping detail and a doorway. Original iron railings with leaf finials run along the west side.

The interior of No 31 retains original features, including marble chimney-pieces, panelled doors, and a stick baluster staircase with a mahogany handrail. No 30 has seen more extensive internal alterations, though some 19th-century panelled doors and a small fireplace with a grate on the first floor remain.
