Description
The Dumfries Arms Hotel, located at 54 Glaisnock Street in Cumnock, dates from the late 18th century and has undergone various later additions and alterations. This hotel features a rectangular plan with two storeys and an attic, comprising three bays, along with a later three-storey wing at the rear and single and two-storey wings on the sides. The exterior is constructed from coursed and random buff rubble, with coursed and snecked red rubble in the late 19th-century sections, and has ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The front elevation includes a base course, a wallhead course, coped skews, and a mix of single and paired sash and case windows with 2, 4, and 12 panes.
On the front elevation, there is a central door with a modern gabled canopy, a bipartite window to the left, and a single window to the right. The first floor features a single window in the centre and to the right, an oriel window to the left, and three dormerhead windows with ball finials and gables in the attic. To the right, there is a two-storey wing from the early 19th century, which has a door with a chamfered doorcase at a splayed angle, a corbelled square above, a bipartite window to the left, and oriel windows on the first floor. The left return gable has a single and a bipartite window. The single-storey late 19th-century wing on the left has a bipartite window, while the left return gable is blank.
The rear elevation features a three-storey mid-19th-century wing that is advanced to the centre with a blank gable. The right return has four bays with an enclosed fire escape, and there are various windows on the left return. Additionally, there is a further two-storey late 19th-century wing advanced to the left, which includes a door and various windows. The interior has not been seen.
