Crichton Church Of Scotland, Ayr Road, Cumnock

Crichton Church of Scotland, located on Ayr Road in Cumnock, was designed by D Menzies from Edinburgh and built between 1897 and 1899. The church features a curvilinear Gothic style, constructed from red snecked rubble with a slated roof. The broad south gable front includes a doorway with three orders of granite shafts, a pair of two-light windows, and a rose window above. To the west, there is a low gabled tower, while the tall four-stage tower has twin belfry windows and a stone spire that rises 140 feet, adorned with tall lucarnes and flanked by octagonal pinnacles on the east side. The body of the church has gabled flanks with three-light windows and transcepts with four lights, as well as a canted organ chamber apse. Inside, the church features a pitch pine roof that is open to collar beams, and there is a gallery at the south end over the entrance vestibule.
