Description
Knox's Church, located on Howard Street in Arbroath, was designed by James MacLaren in 1866. This Gothic church sits on a corner site and features a nave with aisles and a main gabled entrance facing Howard Street. The corner nearest the street is accentuated by a square tower that rises two stages higher, which includes a clock and belfry, possibly intended to have a spire.
The church has a T-plan layout with shallow gabled transepts and flank buttresses that extend upwards through the eaves. The entrance consists of a double doorway set below a pointed arch, with the moulding continuing as a string at cill level. Above the entrance is a large geometric traceried window, while the other windows are mostly lancets. The exterior is constructed of snecked ashlar with polished dressings, featuring blocked eaves and slate roofs.
Inside, the church has a galleried interior and houses an organ made by Peter Conacher & Co in 1895, which was transferred from Brechin West Free Church in 1948. The property is enclosed by an iron-railed boundary wall that steps down to follow the slope of the land.
