Description

The Arbroath North Signal Box, built in 1911 by the North British Railway Company, is a large, two-storey structure with a rectangular plan and a piended roof. The base is made of tall, narrow brick and features three segmental-arched windows. The signal cabin above is supported by nine metal trusses that extend over the base to the west. There is a cast-iron walkway on the north, west, and south elevations of the signal cabin.

On the south elevation, a timber dog-leg stair with brick support leads up to a projecting timber entrance porch, with a locking room door located below. The east elevation, or rear, is made of red brick and reaches full height, containing four small segmental-arched windows that light the upper part of the locking room. A corbelled-out chimney stack is positioned at the top right, with cabin glazing extending back to the outer right from the north elevation. A single-storey lean-to outshot is attached to the north elevation.

The timber windows on the base have a six-pane glazing pattern, and the roof is covered with slate. However, the signal cabin has non-traditional replacement windows.

Inside, the signal box contains a 72 lever frame made by Stevens and Son, along with various signalling equipment, and later panel signal equipment is located to the north.

Additionally, there is a large cast-iron railway footbridge from 1911, featuring a lattice girder balustrade, which spans the level crossing nearby.
