Description
Hammerton Station Signal Box Cabin is a railway signal box cabin built in 1914 for the Southern Division of the North Eastern Railway. It features vertical timber boarding on a timber frame and has a timber boarded roof.
The cabin resembles a large timber boarded cupboard, measuring about 2 meters wide and 1 meter deep. It has no windows, and the rear side, which faces away from the tracks, can be fully opened with a pair of ledged and braced, timber-boarded doors that have curved tops. A peep-hole on the west side wall allows the signalman to see the level crossing. The side of the cabin facing the tracks is lower than the doors and also has a curved top, creating a shallow segment. As a result, the single pitched roof is curved from side to side. The exterior is simply detailed, although the door frame, including the curving lintel, features roll moulded edges.
Inside, the cabin contains a 10 lever McKenzie & Holland frame, requiring the signal operator to stand outside the doors to control the levers. The roof is supported by a curved purlin along with curved wall plates, while the rest of the timber framing is conventional.
