Description
The Baltic Works, located on Dens Road in Arbroath, is a power loom linen weaving factory built in 1852. It features a combination of ashlar and squared rubble construction with slate roofs. The windows are mostly multi-paned sash and case, although many are now blocked.
The factory has a prominent 4-storey, 13-bay Palladian-style frontage, characterized by a triple pediment, with the pedimented sections slightly advanced and defined by quoins. The gables are 3-bay with die finials, one of which is missing. A central arched entrance leads into the building. The rear of the factory is very plain and has few windows. A ground floor weaving shed that was attached to the east side was demolished in 1998.
Inside, the factory features a fireproof iron frame supported by two rows of columns, which carry cast iron beams and brick arched ceilings. The roof is made of wrought iron. There are two ashlar staircases with iron handrails at the top.
Additionally, there is a long 2-storey wing with an end gable stack that served various functions, including a lodge, office, mechanics shop, and preparation departments, with a boiler house and drying room located nearest to the river. This wing has a tall square chimney with a Doric base that supports a circular brick shaft, although the top cornice is missing.
The Beam Engine house features a large 4-part window in the west gable, complete with a die finial. The north elevation is adjoined to the weaving shed. Inside, there is a cast iron grid mezzanine at the level of the beam engine, along with a ceiling hook for hoisting the beam and a cast iron stair.
The wall facing the River Brothock is pierced at regular intervals by cast iron brackets and surrounds for line shaft bevel gearing. The kingpost roofs of the weaving shed were removed in 1998.
