Description

David Burnie of Edinburgh, architect. Foundation stone 19

August 1892 opened 1893. French Gothic. Nave, north and south

aisles, shallow transepts, tall 2-stage tower with facetted

spire at north west, canted stair compartment at south west.

Whinstone with red sandstone dressings. West elevation:

recessed doors under pointed moulded heads at base of tower

and stair; gabled west end with octagonal angle piers rising

to pinnacles, 6 arcaded lights below 2 deeply recessed

geometric traceried windows with nook shafts, the outer and

central shafts rising to parapet and supporting gargoyles,

triple light in gable with apex finial. Tower: 2-stage with

2 tall lancets over door and arcaded lights above; upper

stage with tall gabled louvred lights, clasping octagonal

pinnacled buttresses. Side elevations with triple lights to

ground and gallery in each bay. Interior: good gallery with

panelled front and supported on cast-iron columns. Decorative

organ case.
