St Mary's Church, Academy Road, Moffat

St Mary's Church, located on Academy Road in Moffat, was designed by architect David Burnie of Edinburgh. The foundation stone was laid on 19 August 1892, and the church was opened in 1893. It features a French Gothic style with a nave, north and south aisles, shallow transepts, and a tall two-stage tower with a facetted spire at the northwest and a canted stair compartment at the southwest. The church is constructed from whinstone with red sandstone dressings.

The west elevation includes recessed doors under pointed moulded heads at the base of the tower and stair, along with a gabled west end featuring octagonal angle piers that rise to pinnacles. Below the gable, there are six arcaded lights and two deeply recessed geometric traceried windows with nook shafts, where the outer and central shafts extend to the parapet and support gargoyles. The gable also features a triple light with an apex finial. The tower has two stages, with two tall lancets above the door and arcaded lights above; the upper stage includes tall gabled louvred lights and clasping octagonal pinnacled buttresses. The side elevations feature triple lights at both the ground and gallery levels in each bay.

Inside, there is a well-designed gallery with a panelled front supported on cast-iron columns, and a decorative organ case enhances the interior.
