Hopetoun House, Academy Road, Moffat

Hopetoun House, built around 1723, is a three-storey, three-bay symmetrical terraced house located on Academy Road, the main street entering Moffat from the north. The house features painted render with smooth advanced margins around the windows and doors, while the rear elevation is constructed of pointed rubble. The pitched roof is covered with grey slates and has a wide stone and coped mutual chimney stack on the south gable.

The front elevation includes a central doorway flanked by equally spaced narrow windows, with the second-floor windows positioned just below the roof eaves. The entrance door is a four-panel timber design, and the windows are plate glass in sash and case style. The rear elevation features a central single-storey outshot, with 12-pane sash and case windows.

Photographs from 2019 reveal some well-preserved plain mid-18th century timber panelling in the stairwell and upper floors. In the dining room, there is a cast iron range set in a droved stone surround with a tiled hearth, embossed with the maker's mark of 'D. Anderson Ironmonger, Moffat'.
