Description
Palm Cross Green House is a house dating to 1721, with later modifications. It is situated at the top of Church Street in Modbury, and now abuts later buildings. The house was originally entered from the east through a garden, but is now accessed from the north via the road. The exterior is rendered or painted rubble with slate and asbestos-cement slate roofs. The symmetrical front of the house has three windows, with 12-pane sashes. A French window is located to the right, and a part-glazed 6-panel door is centrally positioned within plain reveals. The hipped roof features a central valley and two valley stacks. The north-facing side of the house, at two storeys with two windows, incorporates 16-pane sashes. A blank window on the first floor left is painted onto the wall, with applied strips mimicking glazing bars. A 6-panel flush door, set in deep reveals, provides access to a through passage, while a plank door is located to the left, set within a short length of attached boundary wall. The south front has hipped ends and various sashes. The interior has lost the original main staircase but retains a secondary staircase in the back half. The former stair hall is flanked by two square rooms, each approximately 4 metres square, with two elliptical-headed recesses on the back wall. The left room has a good 18th-century fireplace with an eared architrave and egg and dart moulding to the mantel. The right room features a later Victorian fireplace, but retains a good moulded and enriched cornice. Ground floor windows have shutters.
