23, 27 Market Square, Duns

23 and 27 Market Square in Duns is a mid-18th century building that has undergone later rebuilding. It is a three-storey, two-bay shop with a flat above. The ground floor features a plain three-bay rendered shopfront with a door flanked by large windows. The upper floors have had their render removed, revealing patched rubble, with windows in each bay grouped towards the centre, and painted ashlar margins and an eaves course. A Velux rooflight is present.

At the rear, there is a projecting gable with steps leading to a panelled door and a window on the ground floor, and a single window on the first floor. The right return has windows on both floors. The front has fixed 12-pane timber windows, while the rear features 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there is an ashlar coped mutual skew and a brick stack.

Inside, there are panelled shutters and doors along with simple moulded cornices. Recent plaster removal has exposed some timber-framed walls with handmade brick infill.
