Description
49 and 50 Market Place in Selkirk is a mid-19th century building with later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey structure with an attic and features three bays, providing shop accommodation on the ground floor. The exterior is made of channelled ashlar with some rendered repairs and is harled on the southeast side. There is a base course and a band course or fascia between the ground and first floors.
On the northwest elevation facing the market place, there is a panelled two-leaf door in a roll-moulded doorway at the center of the shopfront, flanked by two fixed-pane shop windows. To the outer left, there is a panelled door leading to the tenement, which has a rectangular plate glass fanlight above it. Each bay on the first floor has a window, and there are gabled dormer windows in the outer bays of the attic that break the eaves, topped with ashlar coped dormerheads.
The southeast elevation includes a two-storey platformed addition at the ground level in the left and center bays. There is a window on the first floor and another in the attic, which breaks the eaves and has a half-piended dormerhead above it in the right bay.
The building features four-pane timber sash and case windows and has a slate roof with a platform at the apex. There is a piended skylight on the platform to the southwest and brick coped mutual stacks.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
