Description

Later 19th century with later additions and alterations. 2-storey with attic, 4-bay L-plan tenement with shop accommodation at ground; sited on ground falling to NW. Stugged ashlar with droved ashlar and polished ashlar dressings; line-rendered addition to outer right of NE of No 42; harled NW elevation; whinstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings to SW. Base course of Nos 40 and 41 rises to be cill course to No 42; plain raised margins at 1st floor windows of 2-bay group to right; corbelled cill and chamfered margins with corbelled pediments to 1st floor and attic windows of 2-bay group to left; quoin strips; flush long and short quoins and tails to window margins to SW.

NE (MARKET PLACE) ELEVATION: paired bays with 2-bay group to left advanced and gabled. Boarded 2-leaf door (entrance to No 40) to centre of gabled bays, flanked by plate glass fixed-pane shop windows; fascia and cornice above; window to each bay at 1st floor and window to gablehead above. Panelled and glazed door (entrance to No 42) to centre at ground of 2-bay group to right with plate glass fanlight; plate glass fixed-pane shop window in bay to right at ground with boarded section above; boarded door (entrance to No 41) with semi- circular fanlight above in bay to left at ground; modern fascia above. Window to each bay of 1st floor. 2-storey lean-to addition to outer right.

SW ELEVATION: gabled 2-bay group to right with window at 1st floor and to gablehead of bay to right; full-height half-piended addition with window at 1st floor, in bay to left and overlapping to bay to right of 2-bay group to left. Window at 1st floor of bay to left of 2-bay group to left.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows to NE; 4- and 6-pane timber sash and case windows to SW. Slate roof with platform to 2-bay group to NW; harled with ashlar dressings and coping to gablehead stack. Slate roof to 2-bay group to SE, with ashlar coped skew and skewputt to gable of NE. Ashlar gablehead stack to NE and SW. Half-piended canted 3-light window to centre of 2-bay group to right, NE elevation. Half-piended dormer in bay to left of 2-bay group to left, SW elevation.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1996.
