Description
47 and 48 Market Place in Selkirk is a mid-19th century two-storey building with an attic, featuring three bays and a shop on the ground floor, along with a fragment of a former adjoining neighbour. The structure is constructed of stugged ashlar with droved ashlar dressings, and has a line-rendered chamfered corner on the outer left of the north elevation. The east and south elevations are harled. There is a fascia and cornice between the ground and first floors, as well as an eaves course.
On the north elevation facing Market Place, there is a fixed-pane plate glass shop window in the center at ground level. To the right is a panelled and glazed shop door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight above, while to the left is a panelled door with a plate glass letterbox fanlight. The first floor features regular windows.
The south elevation includes a lean-to single-storey addition, with a window at the first floor to the left of center. The building has four-pane timber sash and case windows, except for modern glazing on the window to the south. The roof is slate with a brick coped mutual stack to the west. The north elevation has a half-piended canted three-light window in the center of the attic, a modern platformed dormer window in the left bay, and a half-piended dormer to the left of center on the south elevation, along with a two-pane skylight to the right.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
