Description

This is a later 19th-century tenement building, with subsequent additions and alterations. It is two storeys with an attic, featuring an L-shaped plan over four bays, and incorporates shop premises on the ground floor, situated on a slope falling towards the northwest. The building is constructed of stugged ashlar, with droved ashlar and polished ashlar dressings. A line-rendered addition extends to the outer right of number 42 on the northeast side, while the northwest elevation is harled. The southwest elevation utilizes whinstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings. The base course of numbers 40 and 41 rises to form the cill course for number 42. The right-hand two-bay group displays plain raised margins at the first-floor windows, while the left-hand two-bay group features a corbelled cill and chamfered margins with corbelled pediments above the first-floor and attic windows. Quoin strips are present, with flush long and short quoins and tails to the window margins on the southwest side.

The northeast (Market Place) elevation comprises paired bays, with the left-hand two-bay group advanced and gabled. A boarded two-leaf door provides access to number 40, centrally positioned within the gabled bays, flanked by plate glass fixed-pane shop windows. A fascia and cornice are positioned above. First-floor windows are present in each bay, with a window also in the gablehead above. A panelled and glazed door, with a plate glass fanlight, serves as the entrance to number 42, centrally located on the ground floor of the two-bay group to the right, accompanied by a plate glass fixed-pane shop window. A boarded door, with a semicircular fanlight above, is found in the bay to the left at ground level for number 41, with a modern fascia above. There is a window in each bay of the first floor. A two-storey lean-to addition extends to the outer right.

The southwest elevation showcases a gabled two-bay group to the right, with a window at the first floor and in the gablehead of the right-hand bay. A full-height, half-piended addition, with a window at the first floor in the bay to the left, overlaps the bay to the right of the two-bay group to the left. A first-floor window appears in the bay to the left of the two-bay group to the left.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows are present on the northeast side, while the southwest side features four- and six-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is slate-covered, with a platform to the northwest two-bay group. The gablehead stack is harled with ashlar dressings and coping. A slate roof, with an ashlar coped skew and skewputt to the gable of the northeast side, covers the two-bay group to the southeast. Ashlar gablehead stacks are present on both the northeast and southwest sides. A half-piended, three-light window is centrally positioned within the two-bay group on the right of the northeast elevation. A half-piended dormer is located in the bay to the left of the two-bay group on the southwest elevation.

The interior was not inspected in 1996.
