Description
The Post Office and Post Office House on Bridge Street in Coldingham dates from the late 18th century, with later additions and alterations. It is a 2-storey building that was originally a 3-bay house. To the left of the center, there is a later 3-bay shop front with classical detailing that projects at ground level. There is also a lean-to addition on the outer right and a single-storey lean-to projection at the rear. The building is constructed from whinstone and sandstone rubble, featuring narrow quoin strips, rubble quoins, plain margins, and projecting cills.
On the west elevation, the entrance is marked by a timber panelled door located centrally at ground level, which is topped by a fanlight. There is a single window aligned above it on the first floor, and additional single windows at both floors in the bay to the right. The shop front to the left of the entrance includes a part-glazed timber panelled door that is recessed at the center, a fanlight, large flanking windows, pilastered quoins, and a continuous bracketed cornice. There is also a single window, which was originally a door, in the lean-to addition on the outer right.
The east elevation at the rear features a lean-to projection that is offset to the left of center, with single windows in all three bays on the first floor.
The front windows are fitted with plate glass and 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, while the rear windows have 9-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring stone-coped skews and scrolled skewputts. There is a corniced sandstone chimney stack on the north side and a replacement chimney stack on the south side, along with various circular flues.
The interior was not seen in 1999. There is a cobbled parking area in front of the building, offset to the right of center.
