Description

The New Inn, located on Bridge Street in Coldingham, is likely an early 19th-century coaching inn with later additions and alterations. It features an L-plan layout, consisting of a two-storey, three-bay block on the right with a further piended projection at the rear. To the left, there is a tall single-storey, two-bay rectangular-plan former stable and hayloft block, which has a curved corner to the northeast. Additionally, there is a single-storey block that encloses a courtyard at the rear. The building is constructed of rubble, with some areas harled at the back, and it has predominantly tooled sandstone dressings, long and short quoins, and surrounds to openings that are partly droved. The single-storey block has rendered margins, and flush cills are present throughout.

On the west elevation, the principal block features a centrally located two-leaf, flush-panelled timber door at ground level, accompanied by a plate glass fanlight and a painted surround. There are single windows flanking the door at ground level, and each bay on the first floor has a single window. The single-storey block to the left also has single windows in both bays.

The north elevation includes a gabled projection on the right with a blocked attic opening at the centre. To the left, there is an irregularly fenestrated two-storey range that is recessed, with various additions at the front and a single window in the piended range on the left. The single-storey block enclosing the courtyard is located on the outer left.

The south elevation features a gabled end with single windows on both floors to the left and a single window on the first floor to the right. There is a small attic light offset to the left of centre. A rear wing is attached to the right, which has single windows on both floors, with the upper window breaking the eaves. There is a separate property adjoining to the right.

The windows throughout the building are predominantly plate glass timber sash and case. The roofs are covered with grey slate, steeply pitched on the single-storey block, and feature stone-coped skews. The main block has corniced apex stacks, along with various circular chimney cans.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The courtyard is enclosed by a heavily-pointed rubble wall, which includes some red brick sections.
