Description

Fern Neuk is a house located on High Street in Coldingham, dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions and alterations. This two-storey, three-bay house has a rectangular plan and is set at an angle, forming the end of a terrace. It features whitewashed harl with sandstone ashlar dressings, an eaves course, and flush cills.

The north elevation, which is the entrance side, has a timber panelled door with an integral three-pane fanlight centered at the ground level. There is a gabled porch that projects to the front, flanked by squat, bulbous, square-plan columns on the coped front wall, with engaged columns set behind. A small window is aligned at the first floor. On either side of the entrance, there are single windows at ground level, and above, pointed-arched ashlar dormerheads break the eaves with single windows. To the left, there is a single-storey projection, and a separate property is set at right angles to the outer left, featuring a square-headed pend at ground level.

The west side elevation shows a gable end with a canted window at ground level, offset to the left of center, and a single window aligned at the first floor. The south rear elevation has the principal block with a canted window at ground level, offset to the right of center, and a single window offset to the right above. There is a gabled projection to the outer right with a square window at ground level, offset to the left.

The windows throughout predominantly feature lying-pane glazing in timber sash and case styles, with 8-pane glazing in the canted windows. A square window is centered at the first floor on the front with round-arched tripartite glazing, while an octagonal window in a square opening is located at the rear, along with a modern rooflight. The roof is covered in grey slate with terracotta ridge tiling and stone-coped skews, while the canted windows and porch have red tile roofs. The house has prominent sandstone cornices on the whitewashed ridge and apex stacks, with circular terracotta cans.

The interior was not seen in 1999. The property is partially enclosed by low coped whitewashed boundary walls, with a decorative iron pedestrian gate at the front.
