Description

The Playhouse Cinema, located at 5 and 7 Murray Street in Perth, was designed by Cattanach of Kingussie in 1933, with T B Gibson as a consultant for Caledonian Associated Cinemas. This large Art Deco cinema features shops on the ground floor and is constructed of red brick with marble-clad shopfronts and a tower, which is now painted. It retains its original canopy and metal-framed glazing, along with various decorative elements inside.

The facade includes a recessed central doorway with four sets of double doors, topped by a canopy that features Art Deco neon tube lighting. Above this, there is a marble-faced, buttressed tower, also painted, with a horizontal "Playhouse" sign in script above a three-light window. The shopfronts on either side curve into the tower, with upper floors showcasing brick band courses and continuous wrap-around horizontal windows. The sides and rear of the building are constructed from stock brick.

Inside, some decorative elements have been preserved, although the auditorium has been subdivided and repainted. The interior features a cantilevered balcony, stylised pilasters, and an Art Deco cornice on the walls, along with a panelled ceiling. The foyer includes curved metal banisters on the stairs, and original doors with chrome fittings remain upstairs leading to the auditorium and bar.
