Description

Sharp's Institution, located at 6 and 8 South Methven Street in Perth, is a former educational building designed by David Smart in 1860. This two-storey structure with an attic features nine bays and exhibits a symmetrical Italianate style. It includes an impressive four-stage central square-plan clock tower and has single-storey wings to the north and south, which currently house a restaurant and bar, established in 2009.

The building is constructed from coursed rubble with polished ashlar margins and raised rusticated quoins. It has a base course, band course, eaves band, and overhanging eaves. The windows are framed with raised architraves, which are lugged at the first storey. The ground floor has round-arched openings with keystones, while the bays flanking the tower feature small segmental-arched dormers with pediments.

The central tower is a prominent feature, rusticated at the ground level and adorned with a pedimented Doric doorway that leads to a panelled two-leaf timber entrance door. Above this doorway, there are tripartite windows across two stages, and the top stage includes a recessed clock panel with a corbelled cornice. The flanking recessed single bays contain two-light windows with stone mullions on the first storey.

The building predominantly features 6-over-6 pane and 4-over-4 pane timber sash and case windows. The end bays have piended roofs, while the tower is topped with a low pyramidal roof and a ball finial, all covered with grey slates. The structure also includes ridge stacks and cast iron rainwater goods.

The interior of the building was comprehensively modernised as of 2009.
