Description

Perth Congregational Church, built between 1897 and 1899 by Steel and Balfour of Glasgow, is a 5-bay, gabled and buttressed Scots Gothic church located on a prominent corner site. It features an integral single-bay, 2-storey hall to the west. The church is constructed of bull-faced red sandstone with smooth buttresses and margins, including a base course, band courses, and hoodmoulding. The north and south elevations are adorned with large, 2-light tracery windows that have stone mullions and transoms, while other lancet windows are present in the gables. The roof is topped with a polygonal, finialled fleche. The south elevation has buttresses that break the eaves and an advanced single-storey gabled section on the far right.

The main elevation facing Kinnoull Street is symmetrical, featuring a part crow-stepped gable. It has a central 2-leaf timber entrance door with multi-pane glazing above, set in a deep-set moulded doorway with a cross finial at the apex. Above the entrance is a large, 6-light geometric-tracery window, with lancet window openings at the ground level. The upper section of the outer bays has 3-light arcaded window openings with colonettes, and the corners are accentuated by pinnacled buttresses.

The church hall is internally linked to the church and has a timber entrance door to the right. It features a 3-light window opening at the ground level with stone mullions and transoms, and a 3-light tracery window in the upper storey, complemented by ball finialled corner buttresses. The windows predominantly have leaded clear glass, and the roof is covered with green slates and red ridge tiles.

Inside, as observed in 2009, the church boasts a fine original decorative scheme. The aisles have vaulted ceilings with arches that spring from decorative corbels. The interior includes timber pews and a panelled horseshoe gallery supported by cast-iron columns, which have decorated foliage capitals at the gallery level. There is a decorative timber pulpit with stairs and an en suite organ case, along with panelled timber doors and stone staircases featuring decorative metal balusters and timber banisters.
