Description
Pullar's Dyeworks in Perth is an extensive stone and brick-built dyeworks and dry cleaning establishment, constructed between 1864 and 1896, and located over Perth Lade.
The Mill Street and Kinnoull Street section, built between 1864 and 1865, features an L-plan design with two stories and an attic. It is made of red sandstone rubble with yellow freestone dressings. The symmetrical elevation facing Mill Street has 31 bays, with the end bays slightly advanced and three central bays topped with a pediment. The return elevation to Kinnoull Street has 15 bays and includes a narrower coal store and shop at ground level, with a warehouse and London Room above. There are three segmental arched entrances on the ground floor, featuring cast-iron lintels, one of which has been altered for a shop. Two windows display bronze plaques commemorating the establishment of the firm in 1824, while the remaining windows are 4-pane sash and case. The building has bracketted eaves and piended slate roofs. Inside, there are transverse timber beams supported by cast-iron columns and a wrought iron Polonceau truss roof.
The Kinnoull Street section, completed in 1896, is a four-storey and attic boilerhouse, dress-making, and fur department designed by J M Robertson of Dundee. It is constructed of stugged and squared red sandstone with crow-stepped gables facing the streets and a brick rear. The windows are 4-pane sash and case, and there is a modern lead fascia at ground level. Loading doors are located on the first and second floors, facing Union Street. The interior features a fireproof boilerhouse on the ground floor, with upper floors supported by timber on transverse steel joists and a slated queenpost timber roof.
The Union Street section, built in 1871, is a brick-built fireproof silk cylinder and velvet framing block. This three-storey building with a mansard attic has a 13-bay block, with later strawberry harl applied to the street-facing side. The ground floor has 10 bays, including a door on the outer right and two windows converted into doors, along with a modern fascia. The upper floors feature 16-pane sash and case windows, while the ground floor has 9-pane top-hopper windows. The original swept dormers and ridge ventilators are still present.
Inside, the ground floor has bell capital columns and cast-iron lintels that open into the dyehouse. The upper floors are fireproof, supported by a single row of cast-iron columns that carry Hodgekinson beams and a mansard gothic traceried cast-iron roof.
