Description
North Church, located on Mill Street in Perth, was designed by T L Watson in 1880. This Romanesque church features a nave and aisle, highlighted by a prominent central entrance bay with a diaper-decorated pediment and polygonal side apses. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with channeled rustication at the ground level, and includes a base course, moulded band courses, a corbelled cornice, and a parapet. The clerestory is adorned with round-arched window openings.
The entrance elevation to the north has stairs leading to a flat-roofed portico-style porch, which features a round-arched doorway flanked by Corinthian colonnettes and a semicircular carved pattern above. The corner piers are detailed with inset panels showcasing carved foliage designs and pilaster angle buttresses. Behind the porch is a full-height bay with three round-arched windows supported by Corinthian engaged columns. The gable above is decorated with diaper ornamentation, and there is indented corbelling beneath the parapet. The church also has turreted clasping buttresses and a cross at the apex, with flanking polygonal side apses that have round-arched window openings and indented corbelled cornices. The rear (south) side features a round-arched window arcade at ground level.
Inside, as observed in 2009, the church has five aisled bays with a panelled timber horseshoe gallery supported by cast-iron columns. The ceiling is barrel vaulted, and round-arched arcades separate the nave from the aisles, resting on slender columns with foliate capitals. The aisle bays have domed vaults, and the interior is furnished with timber pews in the aisles and gallery, along with a timber communion table, pulpit, and organ case.
At the rear (south) of the church is a former Session House, which is a two-storey, three-bay Classical building made of tooled sandstone with ashlar margins. It features a band course and cornice, with a timber entrance door on the east elevation topped by a consoled cornice. The north elevation has windows with side lights on both storeys and a blocking course above. Inside, there are some decorative plasterwork cornices, simple fire surrounds, and timber shutters.
