Description

16 and 18 Methven Street is a corner tenement building designed by Peter Roy Jackson and completed in 1894. It is a three-storey and attic structure with a four-bay facade, and there is an additional four-storey and attic single bay added around 1900 on the far right facing High Street. The building houses a restaurant on the ground floor and is prominently situated at a corner site. It features an octagonal corner dormer topped with an ogee-roofed copper drum, and is constructed from squared and coursed red sandstone.

Architectural details include a cornice at the ground level, a cill course, and further cornicing. The ground floor has round-arched window openings with pilaster stone mullions and decorative panelled aprons. A pedimented dormer with a tripartite window is located on the High Street side.

The entrance consists of a two-leaf timber door at the canted corner, accompanied by a semi-circular fanlight, all set within a round-arched doorway that has a consoled broken pediment above. The octagonal dormer features Doric-columned pilaster mullions and a dentilled cornice. The bay on the far right facing High Street has recessed shallow four-light bay windows, topped by a tall Dutch-style gable with pinnacles. Decorative carved foliage panels adorn the apron on the second floor.

The building predominantly has plate glass timber sash and case windows, with plate glass on the ground floor. There are also small pane timber casement windows in the later single bay on High Street. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are large, scrolled wallhead stacks.

The interior, partially seen in 2009, has been comprehensively modernised on the ground floor. The tenement stair features decorative iron balusters and a timber handrail.
