Description
The Old Parish Church Hall on Ayr Street in Troon is a classical building dating from 1837. It features a symmetrical rectangular plan with three bays across and four bays deep, and is topped by a three-stage tower and steeple that is centrally located on the entrance elevation. The main structure is built of cream rubble sandstone, with some areas stugged, and has polished sandstone dressings. Notable architectural details include a raised base course, a polished eaves course beneath corniced eaves, and a polished blocking course. The building has narrow strip quoins, rubble quoins, and long and short surrounds to polished openings, which are predominantly square-headed with projecting cills. The tower is constructed of sandstone ashlar, corniced at each stage, with pilastered angles at the second stage and an octagonal upper stage that leads to a tapering spire.
On the northeast (entrance) elevation, the projecting tower features steps leading to a two-leaf timber panelled door at the ground level, accompanied by a small-pane fanlight, a simple architrave, and a consoled cornice. Above the door is a lunette in a recessed semi-circular panel, topped by a cornice and a corniced parapet. A clock face is centered in the smaller second stage, with a louvred opening above it and a faceted spire crowned by a wind vane. The large round-arched windows in the bays to the left and right of the tower have Y-tracery.
The southeast (side) elevation has single windows in all bays at both ground and gallery levels. The tower is recessed to the outer right and has a blocked opening at ground level, with the second and third stages mirroring the design of the other side. There is a later single-storey addition to the outer left.
The northwest (side) elevation also features single windows in all bays at ground and gallery levels, with the tower recessed to the outer left and a blocked opening at ground level, again with the second and third stages as previously described. A later single-storey addition projects to the outer right.
The building predominantly has replacement small-pane opaque glazing and is topped with a grey slate piended roof, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the gallery was removed in 1939, and the space has since been adapted for use as a hall. The interior features timber dado panelling and a modern panelled ceiling.
The site is enclosed by a coped rendered boundary wall along Ayr Street, which includes decorative iron gates.
