Description

Seagate Evangelical Church, located on West Portland Street in Troon, was built around 1847 and has undergone later additions and alterations. It features a four-bay, rectangular plan with a symmetrical two-storey, three-bay classical front facing the street, which is recessed at the center. To the outer right, there is a single-storey, single-bay addition, and a modern hall is situated at the rear. The exterior is finished in coursed, painted render with contrasting painted dressings, including a raised base course, a cill course at the first floor, and a lintel course beneath the corniced eaves. The building has narrow strip quoins, painted margins, a pilastered entrance, and projecting cills at the ground level, while the side elevations are harled with polished dressings.

The northwest (entrance) elevation features a replacement two-leaf boarded timber door at the center, surrounded by a doorpiece with stop-chamfered pilasters, a plain frieze, a cornice, a block pediment, and a raised keystone. Above the door, there is a single window aligned with the first floor. Both flanking bays contain single windows on each floor, and there is a boarded timber opening in the flat-roofed addition to the outer right.

The northeast and southwest (side) elevations are regularly fenestrated in all bays. The windows facing West Portland Street are opaque with border glazing, while the northeast elevation has small-paned glazing and the southwest features stained glass. The roof of the frontispiece is a grey slate piended roof, with a pitched roof over the hall at the rear, and the building has replacement rainwater goods.

Inside, the church has been modernized. It includes columnar supports for a three-sided boarded timber gallery that is accessed from the vestibule via a stone-treaded stair. The gallery retains original timber pews, while the ground floor has replacement chairs. The interior also features modern timber dado boarding, replacement doors, false ceilings, and plain cornices.
