Description
The Parish Church on Main Street in Scalloway was built in 1840 and is a double-height, symmetrical hall church with a two-bay layout. It features a single-storey gabled vestry wing that projects to the rear. The principal elevation is made of harl-pointed rubble with stugged sandstone dressings, while the side and rear walls are harled with droved and painted ashlar margins around the windows and corners.
The south elevation is symmetrical and includes a piend-roofed single-storey entrance porch at the center, which has a vertically-boarded timber door on the west face. There are gallery windows below the eaves in each bay, and an ashlar birdcage bellcote at the center, which breaks the eaves and has a pyramidal cap topped with a swept ball finial.
The east elevation has a regular arrangement of windows at both ground and gallery levels. The north elevation is also symmetrical, featuring a pair of large segmental-arched windows flanking the center, with a two-bay gable for the single-storey vestry projecting at the outer left. The west elevation mirrors the east but includes a modern single-storey flat-roofed addition at the center.
The church has colored glass in multi-pane border-glazed fixed lights on the principal and side elevations, and the rear elevation features 32-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate and has a piended design.
Inside, there is a horseshoe gallery supported by fluted columns. The boundary walls consist of a concrete-coped dwarf wall along Main Street (with railings removed), cement-rendered gatepiers at the center and taller piers at the outer left and right, both topped with pyramidal caps. Random rubble boundary walls are present on the east, west, and north sides.
