Description
The Methodist Church on Chapel Lane in Scalloway was built in 1861 and features a four by two-bay hall design situated on a corner site. The church includes an entrance porch and a bellcote on the south gable, along with a vestry wing that projects east from the east elevation. The walls are harled, with window margins.
On the south gable, the entrance is symmetrical, featuring a pointed-arched window in the center of the gabled entrance porch, flanked by two pointed-arched windows. At the gablehead, there is a stugged sandstone bellcote on a tapering plinth, which houses a bell set in a pointed-arched opening.
The east elevation, facing Chapel Lane, has a four-pane window and a vertically-boarded timber door on the south side of the chimney-gabled vestry wing, which projects from the outer right bay. There are pointed-arched windows in each bay to the left.
The north gable, facing Houl Road, is a symmetrical two-bay gable with tall Y-traceried windows in each bay. The pointed-arched windows feature nine-pane timber fixed-lights, and the north gable windows are adorned with leaded glazing that includes colored and patterned glass. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate and includes finialled copper ridge ventilators, while the north gable has sandstone skew copes topped with an obelisk-like finial. The vestry has a stugged and droved sandstone stack with a stone cope and a tall circular chimney can.
The church is bounded on the east side by an L-plan harled wall, which is terminated to the north by the vestry. There is also a cement-rendered wall with wrought-iron railings that curves to the west from the north wall of the vestry, ending at rendered gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps.
