Description

Duntocher West United Free Church, built in 1822, is a 2-storey, 3-bay, square-plan Classical church with a late 19th century gabled hall extension at the rear. The church features painted render with raised, moulded and tabbed margins, angle and eaves bands, and rubble on the hall. It has a base course and cornice, with a slightly advanced central bay on the entrance elevation (north) that includes a pilastered, corniced doorpiece with a 2-leaf, 10-panel timber door.

The windows predominantly have small square multi-pane coloured glazing, and the piended roof is covered with grey slates. The church also has cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the church retains a good, original, simple classical decorative scheme. The walls are white painted with timber panelling to the dado, and there is a timber floor. A horseshoe gallery features decorative plasterwork on the moulded balcony, supported by slender cast-iron columns with decorative capitals. The interior includes timber pews with distinctive curvilinear pew ends and curved pews in the gallery. There is a fine, large Baroque-style timber pulpit and chair, a boarded timber ceiling with linear moulding, and curved timber staircases leading to the gallery. The doors are 6-panel timber.

The boundary wall and railings surround the church to the north, east, and west. The low, coped, rubble boundary wall is topped with slim iron railings.
