Description

The Duncan Street Baptist Church, located at 13 Duncan Street, Edinburgh, was constructed around 1843, with subsequent additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay, symmetrical building designed in a severe classical style. A single-storey hall adjoins the rear of the church.

The principal elevation facing south is built of polished cream sandstone ashlar, while the sides are of rubble construction. The rear hall is also of coursed rubble. The detailing includes a base course, cill courses to the first-floor windows, corniced architraves to the windows in the outer bays, giant order pilaster quoins, giant order pilasters and a pediment to the advanced central bay, a deep cornice, and a parapet.

The main entrance is centrally located on the south elevation, featuring a two-leaf panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. It is framed by engaged, square-section columns and a cornice. A single window sits above the door; it has an architrave with a bracketed pediment. Blind windows are present in the outer ground floor bays, with single windows positioned above them.

The eastern and western elevations are four-bay structures. The bays mirror the details and materials of the principal elevation, with blind windows on both floors to the east and a modern door and first-floor blind window to the west. Single windows fill the remaining bays on the ground and first floors.

The single-storey hall at the rear houses a vestry, kitchen, and WCs. Doorways project from the rear of the church to the east and west, and one faces south. Another doorway leads to the main hall from the east elevation, featuring a panelled door and a four-pane fanlight.

The windows are timber, sash and case with 12 panes on the south elevation and hall, while the east and west elevations have smaller, three-pane, leaded windows. The church has a flat roof, while the hall is covered by a grey slate, piended roof.

The interior was reconfigured in 1888. It presents as a simple hall, incorporating a gallery on the south side. The pulpit, panelling, pews, and additional seating are all crafted from carved pine. A raised platform defines the chancel area, with doors on either side leading to rooms beyond. A central pulpit and lectern are present, backed by a panelled wall with a round-arched panel behind the pulpit. Carved balustrade screens flank the platform's sides. The tiled baptismal font is located beneath moveable seating in front of the chancel. A gallery extends across the rear of the church (formerly located on the sides and rear) and is supported by slender, stylized columns at ground level. Doors to the left and right of the gallery lead to stone staircases in the entrance hall, while a meeting room is positioned behind the gallery above the entrance hall. The ceiling is square and coffered.
