Description
35 Upper Gray Street is an early 19th-century pair of classical houses that are two stories high and have six symmetrical bays, forming part of a terrace. There is a single-storey wing attached to the south side, adjoining No. 37. The houses are constructed from cream sandstone droved ashlar, with rubble on the sides and rear. They feature a base course, a cill course for the first-floor windows, a cornice, and a blocking course.
The west (entrance) elevation has architraved, corniced doorways in the central bays, with panelled doors and diamond-patterned, small-paned fanlights above. There are single windows above these doorways. The outer left and right bays, as well as the single-storey wing, also have single windows. The single-storey wing to the south includes a doorway with a panelled door and a diamond-patterned fanlight, with a single window to the left.
The windows are primarily 12-pane timber sash and case, except for the first-floor window of No. 37, which has plate glass. The lower sash of the first-floor window in bay four features leaded glazing. The roof is pitched with grey slate and includes one canted and one bowed dormer for No. 37. There is a mutual coped stack to the north and a rendered, coped wallhead stack to the south, both with moulded cans.
The interior was not seen in 1995. The boundary walls consist of a low coped rubble wall along the street, with replacement railings, except for the central panel that includes a letterbox between the two houses.
