Description

The Regent Cinema, located on Commercial Road in Leven, was opened in 1922 by GC Campbell and has undergone minor alterations in the late 20th century. This former cinema features a classical 'church style' exterior with Art Deco interior details. The building is harled with concrete dressings and has giant order channelled pilasters. It includes a base course, moulded band courses, and a cornice with a pedimented blocking course. A notable feature is a keystoned, round-headed 'triumphal arch' panel, complete with voussoirs and stone mullions.

On the northeast elevation, there is a full-height central bay with a pilastered doorway and a modern fascia beneath the cornice. Above, a tripartite window on the first floor is topped with a pedimented string course, leading to a three-part round-headed panel that is horizontally bisected with a moulded band. At the apex, there is a small bipartite window for the projection room. The lower, pitch-roofed flanking bays include a blocked tabbed and corniced doorcase on the right and a blocked modern window below three narrow lights on the left, each with a bipartite window on the first floor.

The northwest elevation, facing Aitken Street, features a tall seven-bay design, with the outer left bay having a stepped roof. Bays three to six each have a small window close to the roof. The northeast elevation has timber sash and case windows with margined glazing. The roof is covered with tar-sealed slate, and there are cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers.

Inside, the foyer is adorned with columns clad in modern materials and decorative plasterwork cornicing. A dog-leg staircase features cross-frame steel balusters, timber handrails, and panelled dadoes. The galleried theatre has rib vaults that spring from corniced pilasters, with a panelled gallery front. The fixed red plush upholstered flip seats with Art Deco details are retained at the gallery level. The raised stage includes a decorative basket arch and flanking stylised Art Deco details, along with a spiral staircase leading to the projection room, which has a horizontally-clad timber door and steel projection shutters.
