Description

Leven Library, located at 14 and 16 Durie Street, is a two-storey, five-bay building dating from 1887, which was altered for library use in 1995. The building features polychrome brickwork with channelled pilasters, corbel courses, and cornices at both the ground floor and eaves. A notable element is the pedimented plaque that displays a beehive with bees.

On the principal elevation, the ground floor consists of three bays separated by pilasters and features a deep fascia. To the outer left is a deep-set door, with an in-canted display window immediately to the right, followed by a small display window. The centre and right-hand bays also have display windows, while a modern entrance is located at the outer right. The first floor's centre bay showcases decorative stone with the date '1887' beneath a bracketed ledge, accompanied by the beehive and a frieze inscribed with the word 'INDUSTRY', topped by a cornice that leads into a moulded pediment. The flanking bays contain segmental-headed windows, and the outer bays feature bipartite windows with paired brick pilasters.

The windows have a four-pane glazing pattern and are timber sash and case, while the ground floor has fixed display windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped and shouldered brick stacks with cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts.
