Description

Hucknall Library is a public library built in 1887, funded by J. E. Ellis and H. B. Paget. The building is constructed of brick with plain tile roofs and features ashlar dressings, a chamfered plinth, a moulded string course, dentillated eaves, and shouldered coped gables, all in the Renaissance revival style. It is two storeys high and five bays wide, with three gable and two side wall stacks. The windows are leaded mullioned casements.

The front of the library has a central porch that is buttressed and pilastered, topped with a pyramid roof. The central doorway is a Tudor arch with a keystone, flanked by single shoe scrapers. Above the doorway is a frieze with a large bracket lamp, and two casements with keystoned heads and a tympanum that contains the Arms and date. To the left, there is a canted two-storey bay window with a balustrade, and above it, a gable with a casement that has brackets and a swan neck pediment with ball finials. There is also an inscribed datestone to the left. To the right, a three-bay wing features three casements, and above it is a shaped gabled dormer with side brackets, a segmental pediment, and a monogram tablet.

The east side of the library is buttressed and has four bays. To the left, there is a 20th-century addition and a cross wing with a door flanked by single casements. To the right, there is a buttressed range with a small casement above and a central casement that also has a monogram tablet. The interior was refitted in the mid-20th century.
