Description

The Houses of Rest for Miners, built in 1925, were designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield for Sir Julien Cahn. This single-storey building is constructed of brick with plain tile and leaded hipped and gabled roofs, featuring ashlar dressings, rusticated quoins, a stone plinth, string courses, and modillioned eaves. It has six coped ridge stacks and consists of three linked blocks with cross gables, each containing three bays, with the side wings splayed.

The windows are a mix of single and triple glazing bar sashes, topped with keystoned flat arched heads. The central block features a projecting pedimented central bay that includes a pedimented framed blank panel with a crest, flanked by single sashes. Further along, there are larger single sashes and round-headed doorways. Above this central section is an octagonal cupola with a stepped copper dome, clock, and finial.

Each flanking wing has a projecting central bay with two sashes and a pediment containing a round window above, followed by single sashes and doorways, with small casements beyond. Each end of the building has a single sash window. The rear elevations also feature a projecting central pedimented bay with two sashes, flanked by flat-roofed additions, each with a door and single casements.
