Description

Newcastle House is a house that now serves as an extension of the Law Courts, built in 1928 by Sir Reginald Blomfield. It broadly follows the design of the earlier Newcastle House, which was constructed in 1717 for Benjamin Court. The building is made of Portland stone, featuring a Portland stone plinth, band, quoins, and dressings. It has a modillioned eaves cornice and a plain tiled roof. The main block has narrow extensions, with one recessed to the right and a wider one recessed to the left.

The structure consists of two storeys and attics, highlighted by a tall modillioned pediment at the center of the main block, which has a shallow central projection and rusticated quoins. A sundial marked 'CARPE DIEM' is located in the center of the pediment. There are five triangular pedimented dormers: one on each side of the central pediment, one on the left wing, and two on the right. The building features two large stone ridge stacks and a window arrangement of 2 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1, with the central seven windows projecting forward, their roofs appearing hipped against the slightly recessed roofs of the wings. The windows are tall glazing bar sashes with gauged stone heads and raised keystones.

The entrance, located in the center of the main block, is tall and has a moulded surround with a projecting keystone, topped by a broken segmental pediment that includes a scutcheon in the break. The interior retains some original features, including the principal panelled room and most of the main staircase, which were reinstated.
