Description

Parkhill Primary School, built in 1908, is a tall, two-storey school building with a partial attic, arranged in a T-shape and exhibiting Baroque detailing, including domed cupolas atop stair towers. The exterior is harled with stone dressings, incorporating base and eaves courses. Stone transoms and mullions feature throughout.

The southwest elevation, which serves as the primary entrance front, is symmetrical. The six central bays each contain tall, two-part windows on both floors. Flanking these are set-back, four-storey bays with three-part windows and single windows extending slightly above the eaves and terminating in blank pediments. Tower-like wings at either end have steps leading up to pilastered doorcases with recessed, two-leaf, glazed timber doors, marked 'GIRLS' and 'BOYS' respectively. A round-headed window is positioned above the entrance, with a keystone and a heavy segmental cornice, topped by a finialled, domed cupola.

The northeast elevation, at the rear, is five bays wide, with a projecting, piended wing over the central bays. Each bay has two-part windows and narrow flanking lights on both floors. The centre bay of the first floor has segmental cornices over the outer lights, and a glazed, keystoned oculus that breaks through the eaves into a gable. Recessed bays have two-part windows on each floor, and a low, flat-roofed, single-storey extension is situated in the re-entrant angle to the left.

The southeast elevation features a gabled bay with a segmental-corniced oculus (adjacent to the stair tower) high up, and an 'INFANTS' entrance at ground level, set within a similarly detailed doorcase and featuring a semicircular window behind. A two-part window occupies the outer right at the first floor. The northwest elevation is a mirror image of the southeast elevation.

The windows are timber sash windows with small panes and plate glass. The roof is covered in green slates. Stacks have cavetto-coped banding, with some cans; ashlar-coped skewputs are flat; and cast-iron downpipes include decorative rainwater hoppers.

The interior retains numerous original features, including keystoned, segmental-headed openings with small-pane fanlights, plain cornicing, panelled timber dadoes with glazed display cases, and parquet flooring. A large central hall is adjoined by classrooms, and the first floor has oriel windows in the staff offices overlooking the entrance halls. Glazed ceramic tile dadoes are present in the entrance halls and stairways.
