Description
The Bank of Scotland, located at 70-72 High Street in Peebles, was designed by J.D. Cairns and Ford around 1935. This substantial two-storey building with a mansard attic features an austere classical style and has nine bays. The facade consists of polished black and grey granite on the ground floor, while the first floor is made of channelled cream sandstone ashlar. The rear and sides are finished with grey harl. The building has a black granite base course with a scalloped design and a dado line, a channelled band course above the shop windows and first-floor windows, a moulded cornice above the ground floor, deep eaves cornice, and a tall blocking course.
On the south elevation, there is a shopfront inserted to the outer left. The central and outer right doorways are framed with moulded marble architraves and lintels, with the centre inscribed 'Chambers' and the right door inscribed 'Bank' and featuring an armorial shield above it. The right doorway has stylised panelled doors with circular moulded panels. Between the doors is a tripartite shopfront divided by moulded marble mullions and featuring lying-pane glazing. The first floor has regular fenestration, and the mansard attic includes four bipartite box dormers.
The north elevation features large glazed openings, some of which have been altered, along with a large modern addition. The first floor has plate glass timber sash and case windows, and the green slate mansard roof has end stacks.
Inside, the main bank hall has been altered.
