Description
Bank House, located at 90 High Street in Peebles, is possibly from around 1860 and was partly demolished in 1984. This two-storey Italianate bank building features a gabled design with a slightly recessed two-storey, two-bay west wing, which was partially demolished as part of the 1984 alterations. The bank facade is made of cream sandstone, while the remaining elevations are finished with cream harl and ashlar dressings. The building has a base course and an eaves cornice with a blocking course on the west wing.
On the south elevation facing High Street, there is a prominent single bay gabled bank facade to the right, which includes a round-arched doorway framed with an architrave, flanked by architraved windows beneath a mutual cornice. The first floor features a round-arched tripartite window with a keystone, and there is a small round-arched window at the gablehead. The west wing has a two-bay design with regular window placement and a basement recess with railings.
The west elevation has been altered in 1984, featuring a corniced doorway with moulded brackets that were moved from the south elevation, along with a single window above on the first floor.
On the north rear elevation, the bank block on the left has single windows in the basement and large round-arched tripartite windows on both the ground and first floors, with smaller windows on the first floor. There is a reconstructed semi-circular stairtower in the center, regular fenestration, and a secondary doorway to the right.
The roof is covered with purple slate and has metal flashings. The windows include a mix of 12-pane, plate glass, and some replacement styles. The entrance features two-leaf panelled doors. The interior was not seen in 1994.
