Description

This building at 65 High Street in Peebles dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, five-bay house that features modern shops at the front, with a pend leading to a close on the west side and a single-storey section on the north side, which was formerly a coachhouse. The front of the building is finished with smooth render, while the rear is harled.

On the north elevation, there is a plain stop-chamfered late 19th-century shop front in the center, with a pend to the left. The central bay is broader and has a single window with a nepus gable above it, along with a small window in the gablehead that has an ogee lintel dated 1759. The flanking bays have regular fenestration.

The south elevation has been significantly altered and features a forestair leading to the first floor, along with two modern dormers.

The east side of the building includes a two-storey section, with the upper storey slate-hung. It has a moulded doorway with a lintel that is dated 'R S H M 1743'.

The west side consists of a gabled, two-bay, single-storey former coach house that has two infilled keystoned segmental arches, with a doorway in the right arch. Above, there is a row of exposed rafters and an ashlar skew with a pyramidal apex finial. The building has modern replacement windows throughout and is covered with purple-grey slates.

The interior was not seen in 1994.
