Description

1 Ness Road in Stromness is a house built in the earlier to mid-19th century, with later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan house designed in a plain classical style. To the left (south), there is a single-storey, four-bay addition in a gothic style, and to the right (north), there is a two-storey, single-bay flat-roofed addition. The exterior is mostly cement-rendered, with harling on the left side and a cement-rendered and lined finish on the right. There is a moulded cornice between the ground and first floor at the centre, and point-arched openings in the left group of bays. The margins are plain cement.

On the principal east elevation, the bays are arranged in a 4-3-1 configuration. The central three-bay group features a brick-base canted, piended, glazed entrance porch at ground level in the centre bay, with a window above it on the first floor. Each flanking bay has a window on both floors, and the left return has a first-floor window with an attic window and gablehead stack above. The slightly recessed four-bay group to the left has a boarded door with a traceried point-arched fanlight in the bay to the right of centre, and a window in each of the remaining bays. The slightly recessed bay on the outer right also has a window on each floor.

The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, with large picture windows in the addition to the north and traceried, pointed-arched windows in the addition to the south. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a stone ridge, with harled, corniced gablehead stacks on both the north and south sides, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The property is enclosed by harled boundary walls along the east front, topped with a cement cope, and rubble walls along the north boundary. The centre of the boundary walls features corniced square-plan cement-rendered and lined gatepiers.
