8 Franklin Road, Stromness

8 Franklin Road in Stromness is a mid-19th century house that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan symmetrical house, divided internally. To the right (south), there is a single-storey lean-to shed, and at the centre of the rear (east), there is a full-height modern porch accessed by a stone flight. The exterior is finished in harl-pointed rubble with an eaves course and cement margins around the openings. The first-floor windows are set close under the eaves.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a boarded door with a letterbox fanlight located in the central bay at ground level, with a small window above it on the first floor. There is a window in each floor of the flanking bays.

The east (rear) elevation features a full-height lean-to porch in the central bay, with a part-glazed modern door at ground level in the bay to the right and a window above it on the first floor. There is also a window in the first floor of the bay to the left.

The side elevations (north and south) are blank gabled walls with gablehead stacks. The house predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, with a stone ridge, an asbestos covering on the rear porch, and red slate on the south addition. The house has replaced cement skews, corniced rubble gablehead stacks on the north and south, thackstanes, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Additionally, there is a rubble boundary wall enclosing the garden to the east.
