Walled Garden To S, Alquist, 15 Graham Place, Stromness

Alquist is a mid-19th century, two-storey, three-bay house located at 15 Graham Place in Stromness, with later alterations and additions. The house has been re-slated in 1997 and features a rectangular plan with a symmetrical design. There is a flat-roofed single-storey addition set back to the right, and the building is situated on ground that slopes down to the east. It is surrounded by a walled garden to the east and south.

The principal elevation faces south and has a bracketed cornice above a modern glazed architraved door located in the central bay, with a window above it on the first floor. Each bay has a window on both floors, and there is an additional window in the right-hand addition.

The west side elevation features a single bay with a gabled wall, which includes a window on the first floor to the left and a gablehead stack above.

The windows are two-pane timber sash and case, except for the modern window in the addition. The roof is covered with modern asbestos felt, has a concrete ridge, rooflights on the south pitch, and concrete skews. The gablehead stacks are harled and coped, with the eastern stack extended. The property also has uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the 1997 assessment. The walled gardens include a rubble wall enclosing a small garden with a rubble lean-to shed at the southeast corner, as well as a larger rectangular garden enclosed by a rubble wall to the east.
